Quota and EU Data Roaming Control

Helping mobile data customers understand and manage consumption quotas is becoming a vital requirement for mobile communications networks. Camiant helps network operators solve the need for quota notification and management — without demanding expensive upgrades to billing systems.

Usage control has jumped to the forefront recently, most publicly when the European Commission passed a law requiring subscriber notification when certain levels of data roaming charges have been reached. As mobile services proliferate, the EU’s data roaming rule will be just the first example of individual services being sold in individual buckets. As this approach evolves, it will be important to manage these buckets without overhauling large incumbent billing systems every time.

Camiant’s Multimedia Policy Engine (MPE) offers important features for managing quota notification and management:

Supports several ways to manage quota buckets — for a user’s entire data session, an individual application, or shared-quota usage across numerous users based on criteria such as subscriber tier, device type, roaming status and more.
Allows for multiple customer notification methods when quota is reached, ranging from browser redirection to SMS messages.
Enables related enforcement actions using QoS, charging and optimization. For example, once a quota is exceeded, the user can be notified via SMS while bandwidth is reduced and a special application optimization is triggered.
Offers a simple, standards-based procedure that allows niche services to be used under the control of the master biller, without expensive and time-consuming modifications to billing systems. That lets operators bring new products to the market quickly, while readily integrating them into the incumbent infrastructure.
