Quota and EU Data Roaming Control

Helping mobile data customers understand and manage consumption quotas is an increasingly vital requirement for mobile communications networks. Camiant helps network operators solve the need for quota notification and management — without demanding expensive upgrades to billing systems.

Usage control has jumped to the forefront recently, most publicly when the European Commission passed a law requiring subscriber notification when certain levels of data roaming charges have been reached.  As mobile services proliferate, the EU’s data roaming rule will be just the first example of individual services being sold in individual buckets. As this approach evolves, it will be important to manage these buckets without overhauling large incumbent billing systems every time.

Camiant’s Multimedia Policy Engine supports several ways to manage quota buckets for a user’s entire data session, for an individual application, or for shared-quota usage across a number of users based on criteria such as subscriber tier, device type, roaming status and more. When the quota limit is reached, the MPE provides for several customer notification methods, ranging from browser redirection to SMS messages. That’s not all. The MPE also enables related enforcement actions using QoS, charging and optimization. For example, once a quota is exceeded, the user can be notified via SMS while bandwidth is reduced and a special application optimization is triggered.

Importantly, Camiant’s quota mechanism is a simple, standards-based procedure that allows these niche products to be used under the control of the master biller, without demanding expensive and time-consuming modifications to billing systems. That means operators can bring new products to the market quickly, while integrating readily into the incumbent infrastructure.
