Tiering and Bandwidth on Demand

Fixed-line broadband operators have long used tiers of varying bandwidth and dynamic bandwidth on demand (BoD) to maximize their addressable market. With the deployment of advanced networks, mobile operators now have sufficient available bandwidth to deploy this proven marketing technique — and with help from Camiant, they have the means to make it happen.

Camiant's Multimedia Policy Engine (MPE) can instruct the access gateway to deliver multiple basic tiers of service according to a wide variety of conditions, including subscriber tier, time of day or day of week. At the same time, if a user wants to change the bandwidth level temporarily, or the operator wants to change the bandwidth overall or for a particular application, the MPE can instruct the access gateway accordingly in mid-session.

Numerous Camiant customers have chosen to employ BoD as a way to allow customers to sample the improvements rendered by premium-level broadband services featuring faster data rates. Their thinking: Once customers have experienced the improved performance, many will upgrade to premium offerings or exhibit greater loyalty toward their mobile provider at large.

By using Camiant's MPE to manage the subscriber's bandwidth, the existing provisioning system is not interrupted, and the appropriate bandwidth controls can be managed according to the terms of service and acceptable use policy.
