Tiering and Bandwidth on Demand

Tiered bandwidth and bandwidth on demand (BoD) are proven techniques among fixed-line providers for maximizing their addressable markets. Camiant’s policy server, the Multimedia Policy Engine (MPE), helps mobile providers take advantage of these techniques by giving them tools to manage the complex delivery requirements of their broadband networks. Operators can use the MPE to:

Work with the access gateway to deliver multiple tiers of service according to a variety of conditions, including subscriber tier, time of day or day of week.
Instruct the access gateway to temporarily change the bandwidth level mid-session based on the operator’s rules or on a user’s request. This bandwidth change can be applied to overall data session or for a particular application.

Numerous Camiant customers have chosen to employ BoD as a way to allow their customers to sample the improvements rendered by premium-level broadband services featuring faster data rates. Their thinking: Once customers have experienced the improved performance, many will upgrade to premium offerings or exhibit greater loyalty toward their mobile provider at large. In fact, one operator found that 45% of users who self-provision speed preview types of promotions permanently upgrade to the higher tier.

By using Camiant’s MPE to manage the subscriber’s bandwidth, the existing provisioning system is not interrupted, and the appropriate bandwidth controls can be managed according to the terms of service and acceptable use policy.
