Bandwidth on Demand

Long envisioned as a differentiating service, bandwidth on demand (BoD) is now emerging in the real world as a way for fixed-line broadband providers to generate incremental revenue, and a way for customers to enjoy newfound control over their broadband experience.

Among examples: Camiant customers have begun to employ so-called "turbo-button" BoD offerings that allow customers to self-provision enhanced data rates for assigned periods of time as they enjoy an enhanced experience involving real-time, multiplayer video games and other applications. Other Camiant customers are employing BoD as a way to allow customers to sample the improvements rendered by premium-level broadband services featuring faster downstream data rates. Their thinking: Once customers have experienced the improved performance, many will upgrade to premium offerings.

Either way, the ability to deliver an on-demand enhancement in network bandwidth immediately on request — and without the need for time-sapping modem reboots — presents fixed-line network operators with a new service and delivery tool that can elevate revenues and lock in more satisfied customers.
