Camiant's suite of policy server technologies provides the foundation IPTV needs to transcend its best-effort origins — and produce a living-room-ready experience.

It stands for "Internet Protocol TV", but its scope and boundaries are anything but defined. The full range of IPTV services encompasses everything from simple streaming media content ported to a media-PC, to high definition TV channels that flow in the form of Internet data packets to a living-room television set. Today, fixed-line IP network providers are experimenting with different flavors of IPTV as enthusiasm builds around the highly efficient, bandwidth-preserving and content-rich delivery technology.

While the debate surrounding IPTV historically has centered on quality of signal issues and broader content-access questions, a livelier evolution has occurred behind the scenes, as an ecosystem spanning digital rights management, conditional access authorization and in-home terminal technologies comes to life.

A critical missing element in the IPTV migration, however, has been the imposition of quality of service and data policy controls that are essential in moving the medium forward.
