IPTV
It stands for "Internet Protocol TV," but its scope and boundaries are anything but defined. The full range of IPTV services encompasses everything from simple streaming media content ported to a media-PC, to high definition TV channels that flow in the form of Internet data packets to a living-room television set.
Today, fixed-line IP network providers are experimenting with different flavors of IPTV. However, there have been critical missing elements in the IPTV migration — quality of service (QoS) and data policy controls. To become a widely-used communications technology, IPTV must transcend its best-effort origins to guarantee performance throughout a subscriber’s entire session.
Camiant’s PCRF, the Multimedia Policy Engine (MPE), offers several features for elevating IPTV to a living-room ready service:
• |
End-to-end session control. Dynamic controls ensure that adequate bandwidth is available across the end-to-end network path for high quality, uninterrupted service. |
• |
Video differentiation. Provides policies that differentiate between standard definition and high definition video, as well as free and paid VoD sessions, for managing which sessions may use which bandwidth levels. |
• |
Web-based management. Web-based interface and policy creation wizards enable rapid creation of policy rules and provisioning of network topology. |
• |
Utilization statistics. Allows operators to understand network utilization specifically for VoD. |
